Welcome to Switched On

Hello! We are thrilled to announce the first edition of Switched On, our occasional newsletter. The decision to publish a newsletter is a result of speaking with many of you who said you would like to hear from us more often. In an effort to provide as much value to you as possible, we intend to use this newsletter to inform you of new features, tips and tricks, news, and industry trends, as these items relate to our clients' businesses. And we promise we will only send the newsletter when we have something relevant to tell you – roughly once a month.

Therefore, to ensure that you're receiving information that's topical to your business needs, we would love to hear from you on how we can make this newsletter as informative as possible. You can reply directly to this email, and we will respond to you shortly. And, of course, please feel free to forward this on to others in your organisation or let us know and we can add them to our distribution list.

We look forward to hearing from you!

News: Introducing Financial Review TV, Powered by Switch Media

A couple weeks ago we put out a press release announcing the completion of our latest project for Fairfax Business Media: the Financial Review TV internet TV portal. We’re providing development and video hosting services for this subscription-based portal, which is located at tv.afr.com. You can read the full press release on our website.

News: Track your viewers by country

Between Switch.tv and Switch Media, we have viewers and users who visit our websites from around the world. And chances are that you do, too. If so, you’ll be happy to hear that one of your most-requested features is now available on the Analytics section of your Admin Site: geographic viewer information.

Now, when a viewer visits your video portal we are able to determine their country based on their IP address. To view this data, you can log into the Admin Site, go to the respective site page, and click Analytics. Further down the page, you will see a pie chart displaying the top 10 countries in which your videos were viewed, based on the date range and level of granularity that you have selected. Clicking on the “View geographic details” link under the chart provides a table with the complete data.

We hope you’ll find this data as useful as we do! You can try it out now on the Admin Site.

Analytics: What the numbers mean

Whilst we’re on the topic of Analytics, we thought we would provide some clarity around the meaning of the measurement terms used on the Admin Site. We have started building the next version of the site, which will include better label descriptions. In the meantime, here are explanations of the most frequently questioned Analytics stats:

  • A Player Hit occurs anytime the video player is sent to the viewer. For example, if you have a video player on your home page, then a hit occurs each time someone opens your home page (regardless of whether or not the video is played).
  • Starts occur each time the video begins playing, either because the "play" button was clicked, or because your site is configured to begin playing video immediately.
  • An End is the result of the video playing through to the end of the video.
  • Viewer Retention is equal to Ends divided by Starts.
  • Downloads include downloads directly from your site (if allowed) as well as iTunes or RSS downloads (again, if allowed).
  • Total Usage is equal to Starts plus Downloads

Hopefully this provided some clarity around these stats, but if anything is unclear please don't hesitate to contact us by replying to this email.
